Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
